The Clay Making Process

I love creating clay sculptures or plates, or anything, it brings joy to my hands and heart to see what I’ve made take on life. I always make sure I have a big batch of clay on hand so I can sculpt at anytime.

  1. This involved digging up a bucket of dirt with as few rocks and grass as possible and then putting it through a 24 hour process until it’s pure clay and also the consistency I want.

Once I have an idea on hand I get to sculpting. However because my clay is “Wild” clay and not store bought, the consistency and texture vary each time I make a batch. Sometimes it needs more kneading and slapping, and sometimes it’s just ready to use as it is.

Once my sculpting is done the object I’ve created dries for several days, an then goes into an open fireplace on top of coal to bake. All my creations usually protest at this point, and that’s when I remind them that I’ll write a poem for them and paint and glaze new vibrance and character onto them once they’re finished baking. Sometimes my ideas turn out as little masterpieces and sometimes they’re disasters. The important thing is to not get discouraged over the disasters, and to keep going.

  1. Finally like I mentioned above my creations get painted with acrylic paint and varnished (if it’s a sculpture) if it’s an unglazed plate, pot or jar, then firing is the final stage. At the moment none of my creations can handle being soaked in water because I do not have a proper kiln to fire them in. However once I do, I’ll have a lot more unglazed creations that can be found in the kitchen. You can find the vast health benefits of using unglazed earthenware here.
